GENERAL INFORMATION

Vasari Veneziano ™‘, also known as Venetian Plaster, Gracello, Italian Plaster, Polished Plaster or Marmorino Fine, is an integrally colored lime and marble based plaster finish for interior use. It can be applied to create a smooth, marble-polished finish or matte. Its smooth burnished surface is given added character by natural variation and mottling of color. It can be sealed for more demanding areas for dirt and water protection.

Veneziano is made of fine lime, powdered marble, pozzolanic clays, crushed marble, eco-friendly proprietary admixtures and zero VOC, fade-resistant, oxide colorants.

Basic Use: Veneziano is primarily made for interior applications. Contact us if using on exteriors. Veneziano is compatible with primed gypsum board concrete, cured cement, non-gypsum based skim coats and other substrates. It can be sealed for further protection against extreme weather or for greater durability.

Composition: Veneziano is made of fine lime, powdered marble, pozzolanic clays, crushed marble, eco-friendly proprietary admixtures and zero VOC fade resistant oxide colorants.

Colors: Veneziano is offered in more than forty standard colors and
can be custom colored to meet special design requirements. You can also pick a color from any leading paint manufacturer, or send us a
swatch of fabric, tile, or stone you are using and we will match it as close as possible.

The mineral-oxide pigments in Veneziano comply with ASTM C979 to assure permanent, fade-resistant coloration. The plaster can be tinted with universal water-based liquid colorants as well as powder pigments.

Sizes and Coverage: Veneziano covers approximately 30 square meters more or less, per 18.75 liters or 5 gallons for two coats, depending upon thickness and texture applied.

The wet mix weight is approximately 26 kgs. and the dry mix is 20 kgs. Thickness of Veneziano when applied is usually 1mm, more or less, consisting of 2 coats total.

Limitations: Vasari Veneziano should not be used on counter tops, bathtubs, floors or fountains. Special modifications can be made to meet custom requirements. Please contact us for further information.

TECHNICAL DATA

Fire Rating: Surface Burning Characteristics: Veneziano conforms to a Class A finish with 0 Flame Spread and 5 Smoke Density per ASTM E84 – when applied over inorganic reinforced cement board.

Abrasion and Impact Resistance: Vasari Veneziano will have a resistance of 350 P.S.I. when first applied. Over 6-12 months, the

resistance will increase as it absorbs carbon dioxide giving it a final resistance of 800 P.S.I. Durability and impact resistance are also dependent on the method of application. The more the plaster is burnished or compacted, the greater impact resistance it will have.

INSTALLATION

Substrates: Apply Veneziano over substrates that are clean, cohesive, free of contamination and as follows:

Exterior application: In certain instances, Veneziano can be applied on exterior. However, It should be applied over our Stucco product. Depending on environment, the Veneziano should be sealed or modified. Please contact us for further information regarding exterior applications.

EIFS Base Coat: Vasari products can be used over certain EIFS. Please contact us or test your particular brand of EIFS basecoat before application.

Gypsum Drywall: (Interiors Only) Drywall shall be taped and then sanded or floated. Provide Level 3 or better surface in accordance with Gypsum Association’s GA-214. Use only latex or acrylic primers before applying Veneziano.

Concrete and Masonry: Allow concrete and mortar to cure 28 days prior to finishing. Concrete should be free of form release agents that could interfere with adhesion of Veneziano. Sand glossy surfaces prior to application. Mortar joints should be flush. Alternatively, we strongly recommend application of Veneziano over Vasari base coat which can be applied directly to rough plaster (Vasari Base Coat is in lieu of skim coat).

Trim and Fasteners: On exterior and wet areas, use corrosion-resistant materials for expansion and control joints, corner beads, flashings and other trim and fasteners.

Existing painted substrates: Vasari Veneziano will adhere to previously existing painted surfaces as long as they are latex or acrylic (water based). We recommend scuffing the surface for better adhesion and wiping any dust. However, keep in mind that Veneziano’s ability to adhere to the wall is only as good as the existing paint’s ability to stay on the wall.

Existing masonry substrates: Remove deteriorated substrates and patch in acceptable manner. Wash with trisodium phosphate diluted as indicated on product label. Rinse, neutralize and wipe dry. Refer to exterior recommendations if outside.

Preparatory Work: Mask and protect adjacent surfaces and remove any dust from surface, especially after sanding. Mask about 1mm from adjacent surface or trim to allow for thickness of plaster.

Primer: Latex or acrylic primer is required over gypsum board, wood and other substrates with uneven suction or moisture absorption. Allow primer to dry before plaster application.

Mixing dry mix: Add, potable water and mix with drill mixer until homogeneous paste consistency is reached. Typically about 11 quarts of water for every 36 lbs of dry mix Veneziano. Straining the plaster afterwards is recommended with provided strainer.

Equipment and Tools: Essential tools necessary for Vasari application are metal trowels and hawks, ordinary paint brushes. For mixing on site, a hand drill fitted with a mixing paddle is necessary for mixing. Check for availability of these items with us.
Use a well-smoothed and true-straightened edge metal trowel to apply the plaster. Sand trowel edges regularly to keep edges in good condition. Just exert enough pressure to apply the product evenly across the surface. A hawk is handy during application as it saves time and lessens wastage due to spillage and dropped product or “droppings,” when transferring product from pail to trowel.
Always keep pails covered so that no contaminants get mixed into the pails during application.

Masking: Prior to application, mask all areas not intended for plastering. After application, wait for plaster to completely dry before removing the mask. Remove mask gently as some plaster may come off with it during removal. Wait for plaster to completely dry prior to removal.

General Application: Apply finish in continuous application, free from cold joints, scaffold lines and other deficiencies detrimental to appearance and performance. Continuously apply in one general direction without allowing coating to dry at edges; keep a wet edge. If full width of wall cannot be covered at one time, terminate applications at natural divisions of surface such as control joints or corners. Do not bridge expansion or control joints. Use high-quality trowels of types required to produce intended results. 16” trowels or smaller are recommended depending on scope and look required.

Many creative finishes can be produced with Veneziano. At least 2 coats are required. For a very smooth high polish, 3 coats is recommended.

Apply the first coat with 0.5-1mm minimum thickness using a trowel. First coat can be applied smooth or textured depending on look desired. Allow 24 hours for first coat to dry, or until completely dry.

Apply second coat with multiple passes in paper-thin stokes, or with minor texture. When the plaster dries to a clay-like consistency, normally within a few minutes, the plaster can then be burnished or compressed if desired.

Two-Coat Application: (Recommended for leveled and controlled techniques): Apply first layer evenly, approximately 0.5-1mm thick using stainless steel trowel held at 30 degree. Allow to set and completely dry. Apply second coat of Veneziano in multiple paper-thin strokes. As it starts to set, you can burnish it, leave it matte or create a texture adding more thickness if desired.

Blended Colors: A more variegated effect can be obtained by blending several colors together. Apply first color with a smooth surface, then apply second color and work it into the base layer to obtain random yet consistent pattern.

Custom Finishes: Many special effects can be produced with Veneziano. For example, surfaces can be scored to simulate masonry joint lines. Stencils can be used to apply ornamental motifs. And it can be applied over moldings or other sculptural elements to create relief. Rather than trying to describe the specific technique to be used to achieve a custom finish, it is usually more convenient to specify an approved sample board or mock-up as a standard to be matched for a project. Contact Vasari for help developing custom finishes. Watch Vasari Videos for creative instruction.

Lime Wash: Lime Wash should not be applied on Veneziano. It is meant for Marmorino or Stucco.

Sealer: On exterior applications it is recommended to seal the surface. Sealer provides added protection for exterior locations and wet interior locations. Use a Vasari sealer as per application instructions. Allow Veneziano to dry 48 hours before applying sealer. Apply two coats; allow first coat to dry before applying second coat. Excess sealer can form a white residue if not removed promptly.

Soap sealer: Soap sealers can be made from certain store bought liquid soaps made from olive oil, coconut oil or shea butter. These soaps can be diluted with about 80% water, then applied in general interior areas for protection against moisture and stains. Consult our website or contact us for more information.

Wax: Decorative and protective coatings such as wax and glazes can also be used on Veneziano. We recommend these coatings only for interiors and dry environments. Always test waxes or glazes on a sample area before committing to the entire surface. Keep in mind, however, very shiny finishes are difficult to repair should it become necessary to do so because of the high gloss, mirror like finish.

Clean-Up at jobsite: Remove masking. Remove plaster splatters using methods that will not damage surfaces. Use water and gentle scraping to remove splatters from sensitive areas.

Precautions: Use OSHA compliant eye protection. Wear a respirator when mixing, sanding or scraping. Provide well-ventilated work areas. Avoid prolonged skin contact. Do not apply if rain or freezing temperatures are expected within 24 hours; protect from rain for 48 hours after application. Do not apply over wet or frozen surfaces. Apply in 45˚ (7C) and 85˚ (30C).. Keep away from children. Use within six months of purchase. See MSDS and product label.

Appearance Tolerances: Appearance may vary depending upon application and field conditions. Color cards and product samples represent approximate colors and textures only. Final approval should be based on contractor-prepared samples or mock-up, showing actual materials and workmanship proposed for use. Like all exposed plaster finishes, mottling and variations in hue and appearance are normal and a part of Veneziano’s aesthetic appeal.

Cleaning: Remove dust and loose dirt, then, wipe with a clean damp cloth. When necessary, surfaces may be cleaned with mild detergents or proprietary cleaning agents together with gentle scrubbing or low-pressure water washing. Mineral spirits or acetone can also be used; observe proper safety procedures when using solvents. Clean vertical surfaces from the bottom up. Thoroughly rinse exterior surfaces with clean water after cleaning. On interior surfaces, wipe off cleaning agents with a damp rag, followed, if necessary, by a dry rag. Efflorescence, a white powdery deposit that can form on building surfaces, should be removed as soon as practical using water and a soft bristle brush or nylon scouring pad. Test cleaning products and techniques in an inconspicuous location before proceeding and comply with manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not use chlorines or bleaches as they may deteriorate and etch the Stucco.

Inspection: As with any building material, finishes should be periodically examined to assure that surfaces and substrates are in good condition. Examine joints, sealants, flashings, trim and other locations that could permit water to enter the building. Conditions that could produce stains – such as water run-off from roofs or ledges washing down face of a wall – should be corrected. Since Veneziano is a finish coat, cracks that appear in their surface are probably due to cracking within the substrates to which they are applied; extensive cracking could indicate excessive building settlement or movement and should be examined by a qualified building professional.

Blemishes: In many instances, scratches, scuff marks and stains that do not respond to ordinary cleaning techniques may be removed by lightly sanding the surface. The success of this depends on the texture of the finish, and tests should be performed in inconspicuous locations before proceeding. Re-apply sealer or top coat, if required, to sanded areas.

Repairs: Most damage to Veneziano surfaces can be repaired by experienced applicators. Extensive damages may require replacement of an entire section of finished surface.

Graffiti: Consult a firm specializing in graffiti removal and protection. Most serious dirt and stains can be removed by rubbing lacquer thinner.

Shelf life: Vasari Veneziano dry mix will last indefinitely if stored in a sealed environment. Stucco exterior wet mix can be used within 24 hours of mixing. Veneziano, Marmorino and Stucco interior wet mix will last up to 6 months.

Storage and Handling: Store in manufacturer’s unopened packages and in dark and dry place at between 45˚ (7C) and 85˚ (30C). When leaving a pail overnight or for any extended period of time, always add about one half (1/2in) inch of clean fresh water on the surface of the pail. This will compensate for any evaporation during the night. Mix again in the morning to redistribute the water prior to use.

WARNINGS: See MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for specifics.

WARRANTY: Refer to specific section in this website.

Suitability for Use: The end-users or applicators are ultimately responsible for suitability of use of Vasari products and therefore must conduct whatever tests necessary to ensure proper adhesion of Vasari to their intended surfaces.
CAUTION: Ensure that all surfaces are free of dust prior to application of Vasari plaster. Wipe all surfaces clean with a damp cloth prior to application.

CAUTION: When applying plaster on exteriors, always work under the shade, i.e. in the morning, the east side is exposed to the sun. Work on the west side. Conversely, in the afternoon, work on the east side. If it really cannot be avoided, wet the surface well prior to application as the walls will dry very quickly.

CAUTION: When stopping work in the process of application of plaster, i.e. break times or end of work day, do not leave straight edges. Always feather edges so that lines will not develop when continuing application. A straight edge will result in a distinct joint line.

CAUTION: Do not apply too much pressure when applying plaster. This will result in some areas becoming very dark. When you see dark lines or areas or spots during application, that is an indication that too much pressure is being applied.

Different strokes may be used to apply plaster. There is no one “right” stroke to use. This is a matter of preference. Generally, a free-style stroke application results in more texture, more consistent strokes, less texture.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE SALT WATER TO MIX VASARI PRODUCTS.
