Exterior / Interior finish

Technical Data Sheet

GENERAL INFORMATION
Vasari Stucco is an integrally colored plaster and stucco finish for interior and exterior use. It can be finished to a smooth finish for a more modern look or to a textured finish for a rustic look. For added character, subtle pits and fissures, natural variation and mottling of color can be purposely integrated into the application. It can be lime washed for creative variation or sealed for more demanding areas.

Vasari Stucco should be more resistant to cracking, have greater flexibility, better ability to shed water, more mold resistance, easier application, easier fix ability and a better overall look compared to cement or synthetic based stuccos, particularly on exteriors.

Stucco is made of fine lime, marble, eco-friendly proprietary admixtures, pozzolanic clays, crushed marble (sand) and zero VOC fade resistant oxide colorants.
Basic Use: Use Vasari Stucco as a plaster or stucco finish coat for walls and special decorative features. It is recommended
for both interior and exterior environments and is compatible with most plaster base coats as well as primed gypsum board, concrete, masonry and other substrates. It can be sealed for further protection against extreme weather or greater durability.

Composition: Vasari Stucco is a dry powder formulation. It can be supplied as is, or, as ready-to-use colored wet mix. It contains lime, marble, eco-friendly proprietary admixtures, pozzolanic clays, crushed marble (sand) and zero VOC fade-resistant oxide colorants.

Colors: Stucco is offered in more than 40 standard colors and can be custom-colored to meet special design requirements. The mineral-oxide pigments in Stucco comply with ASTM C979 to assure permanent, fade-resistant coloration.

Sizes and Coverage: Stucco comes in 5 gallon buckets, pre-mixed to client-approved color and ready to apply as wet mix. Each 5gallon pail is expected to cover around 14sqm, more or less, for one coat, two-pass method of application and depending on degree of level and porosity of the substrate to which it is applied to, thickness and texture of the finish.

Limitations: Vasari Stucco should not be used on counter tops, bathtubs and fountains. Special modifications can be made to meet custom requirements. Please contact us for further information.

TECHNICAL DATA

Fire Rating: Surface Burning Characteristics: Stucco conforms to a Class A finish with 0 Flame Spread and 5 Smoke Density per ASTM E84 – when applied over inorganic reinforced cement board. Clad assemblies can achieve a fire rating of 1-2 hours. Stucco applied over brick or concrete contributes to the fire resistance of the wall assembly.

Abrasion and Impact Resistance: Vasari Stucco will have a resistance of 750 P.S.I. when first applied. Over 6-12 months, the resistance will increase as it absorbs carbon dioxide giving it a final resistance of 2500 P.S.I. Durability and impact resistance are also dependent on the method of application. The more the stucco is burnished or compacted, the greater impact resistance it will have.

INSTALLATION

Substrates: Apply Stucco over substrates that are clean, cohesive, free of contamination and as follows:
Plaster / stucco Base Coat: Apply base coat in accordance with ASTM C926 – and Portland Cement Association. Float base coat to produce level substrate. Pay attention to moist curing requirements to minimize shrinkage cracking; cure at least 28 days prior to application of finish coating. Consult our technical staff for detailed application instructions.

Gypsum Drywall: (Interiors Only) Drywall shall be taped and then sanded or floated. Provide Level Two or better surface in accordance with Gypsum Association’s GA-214. Use only latex primers.

Concrete and Masonry: Allow concrete to cure 28 days prior to finishing. Concrete should be free of form release agents that could interfere with adhesion of Stucco. Sand glossy surfaces prior to application. Mortar joints should be flush. Use of Vasari base coat highly recommended.
Trim and Fasteners: At exterior and wet areas, use corrosion resistant materials for expansion and control joints, corner beads, flashings and other trim and fasteners.

Existing painted substrates: Vasari Stucco will adhere to previously existing painted surfaces as long as they are latex or acrylic (water based). We recommend scuffing the surface for better adhesion.

Existing masonry substrates: Remove deteriorated substrates and patch in acceptable manner. Wash with trisodium phosphate diluted as indicated on product label. Rinse, neutralize and wipe dry.

Leveling: Remove projections and, if required, fill depressions with leveling coat.

Preparatory Work: Mask and protect adjacent surfaces and remove any dust from surface, especially after sanding.

Primer: Latex or acrylic primer is required over non-cementatious Allow primer to dry before plaster application.

Mixing: Add small amount of clean, potable water and mix with drill mixer until homogeneous paste consistency is reached. Typically about 10 quarts of water for every 44 lbs of dry mix stucco. DO NOT USE SALT WATER.

GENERAL APPLICATION

Apply finish in continuous application, free from cold joints, scaffold lines and other deficiencies detrimental to appearance and performance. Continuously apply in one general direction without allowing coating to dry at edges; keep a wet edge. If full width of wall cannot be covered at one time, terminate applications at natural divisions of surface such as control joints or corners. Do not bridge expansion or control joints. Use high-quality trowels of types required to produce intended results. Vasari offers a full complement of specialty plaster tools.

Application: (Recommended for leveled and controlled techniques): Evenly apply first layer approximately 1/16 inch thick using stainless steel trowel held at 45 degree. Allow to set and completely dry. Apply second coat of Stucco at about a 1/16 to 1/32 inch thick, as it starts to set, you can burnish it or create the texture desired.

Texture: Pitted Finish: Trowel to create pitted and fissured surface. The pressure and amount of troweling can control the extent of pits and fissures.

Smooth Finish: Trowel to close pits. Use water sparingly to dampen surface and continue smoothing until smooth closed surface is obtained. Avoid over troweling and formation of black “veins”.

Blended Colors: A more variegated effect can be obtained by blending several colors together. Apply first color with a
smooth surface, then apply second color and work it into the base layer to obtain random yet consistent pattern.

Custom Finishes: Many special effects can be produced with Stucco. For example, surfaces can be scored to simulate masonry joint lines. Stencils can be used to apply ornamental motifs. And it can be applied over moldings or other sculptural elements to create relief. Rather than trying to describe the specific technique to be used to achieve a custom finish, it is usually more convenient to specify an approved sample board or mock-up as a standard to be matched for a project. Contact Vasari for help developing custom finishes.

Curing: In order to insure workmanship and product quality, the finish should be moistened on the next day and the process repeated the following day. Moisten plaster with clean water. Use spray or hose; start at bottom and work upwards.

Lime Wash: A lime wash can be used to darken pits and fissures to create more contrast. Use Vasari Lime Wash. Allow Stucco to dry 24 hours before color washing. See Lime Wash instructions on www.vasariplaster.com.

Sealer: On exterior applications it is recommended to seal the surface. Sealer provides added protection for exterior locations and wet interior locations. Use a Vasari sealer as per manufacturer instructions.

Allow Stucco to dry 48 hours before applying sealer. Apply according to sealer instructions. Apply two coats; allow first coat to dry before applying second coat. Excess sealer can form a white residue if not removed promptly.

Soap sealer: Soap sealers can be made from certain store bought liquid soaps made from olive oil, coconut oil or shea butter. These soaps can be diluted with about 80% water, then applied in general interior areas for protection against moisture and stains. Consult our website or contact us for more information.
Wax: Decorative and protective coatings such as wax and glazes can also be used on Stucco. We recommend these coatings only for interiors in dry environments. Always test waxes or glazes on a sample area before committing to the entire surface.

Clean-Up: Remove masking. Remove plaster splatters using methods that will not damage surfaces.

Precautions: Delivery, Storage and Handling: Deliver in manufacturer’s unopened packages and store in dark and dry place at between 45 and 95 degrees F. Use OSHA compliant eye protection. Wear a respirator when mixing, sanding or scraping. Provide well-ventilated work areas. Avoid prolonged skin contact. Do not apply if rain or freezing temperatures are expected within 24 hours; protect from rain for 48 hours after application. Do not apply over wet or frozen surfaces. Do not apply when temperature is less than 45 degrees F or more than 95 degrees F. Keep away from children. Use within six months of purchase. See MSDS and product label.

Appearance Tolerances: Appearance may vary depending upon application and field conditions. Color cards and product samples represent approximate colors and textures only. Final approval should be based on contractor-prepared samples or mock-ups showing actual materials and workmanship proposed for use. Like all exposed plaster finishes, mottling and variations in hue and appearance are normal and a part of Stucco’s aesthetic appeal.

Cleaning: Remove dust and loose dirt, then, wipe with a clean damp cloth. When necessary, surfaces may be cleaned with mild detergents or proprietary cleaning agents together with gentle scrubbing or low-pressure water washing. Mineral spirits or acetone can also be used; observe proper safety procedures when using solvents. Clean vertical surfaces from the bottom up. Thoroughly rinse exterior surfaces with clean water after cleaning. At interior surfaces, wipe off cleaning agents with a damp rag followed, if necessary, by a dry rag. Efflorescence, a white powdery deposit that can form on building surfaces, should be removed as soon as practical using water and a soft bristle brush or nylon scouring pad. Test cleaning products and techniques in an inconspicuous location before proceeding and comply with manufacturer’s instructions.

Inspection: As with any building material, finishes should be periodically examined to assure that surfaces and substrates are in good condition. Examine joints, sealants, flashings, trim and other locations that could permit water to enter the building. Conditions that could produce stains – such as water run-off from roofs or ledges washing down face of a wall – should be corrected. Since Stucco is a finish coat, cracks that appear in their surface are probably due to cracking within the substrates to which they are applied; extensive cracking could indicate excessive building settlement or movement and should be examined by a qualified building professional.

Blemishes: In many instances, scratches, scuff marks and stains that do not respond to ordinary cleaning techniques, may be removed by lightly sanding the surface. The success of this depends on the texture of the finish, and tests should be performed in inconspicuous locations before proceeding. Re-apply sealer or topcoat to sanded areas if required.

Repairs: Most damage to Stucco surfaces can be repaired by experienced applicators. Extensive damages may require replacement of an entire section of finished surface.

Graffiti: Consult a firm specializing in graffiti removal and protection.
WARRANTY: Refer to specific Warranty section found elsewhere in this website.
Shelf life: Vasari Stucco dry mix will last indefinitely if stored in a sealed environment. Stucco exterior wet mix can be used within 24 hours of mixing. Stucco interior wet mix will last up to 6 months.
